Thai auction plates and how their prices work

Two plates with the number 9999 can differ in price several times over. Here is what decides the price of a Thai auction plate.

In short

  • Auction plates are special numbers that the DLT sells through auctions.
  • Each province has its own picture design, and each number exists once per letter series.
  • Prices range from tens of thousands to millions of baht.
  • The number pattern matters most, then the letters, the province and the plate sum.

What is an auction plate?

The Department of Land Transport (DLT) holds back attractive numbers and sells them at auction. These plates have a picture background designed for each province, so a Bangkok auction plate looks different from a Phuket one.

Each number in each letter series exists only once. After someone wins it, another person can only get that number if the holder transfers the rights. Auction plates can be transferred and resold, which is how shops like ours sell them.

People in Thailand often call these "VIP plates". VIP is not an official name. It usually means a rare number: single digits, doubles, triples, quadruples or matching letters.

Six things that set the price

  1. Number pattern. Short and easy-to-remember numbers cost the most. Single digits and quadruples such as 9999 are at the top, then triples, doubles and running sequences.
  2. Letters. Double letters or letter series that read as a lucky word usually cost more for the same number.
  3. Province. Plates from provinces in high demand sell for more.
  4. Plate sum. A plate with both a beautiful number and a good sum is the hardest to find.
  5. Vehicle type. Car, van, pickup and motorcycle plates have different buyers and different prices.
  6. Market timing. When several people want the same number at once, the price tends to rise.

Buying from a shop or bidding yourself

To bid yourself, you wait for a DLT auction round, compete with other bidders and do not know the final price in advance. When you buy from a shop, you see the number and the price first, the plate is certain, and we handle the transfer paperwork.

Getting a beautiful number for less

  • Pick the number pattern first, then compare letter series. Some series cost much less for the same number.
  • If your car can be registered in another province, a plate from that province may cost less.
  • If the meaning matters more than rarity, a classic white plate with a good sum costs far less.
  • Tell us your budget and Khun Pokkie will suggest similar numbers that fit it.
