How to buy a Thai license plate safely
Plates can cost from tens of thousands to millions of baht. Before you pay, know who you are buying from and what you will receive.
In short
- Auction plates are bought by transferring the rights to the number.
- Classic white plates are bought by swapping plates between two cars.
- You should receive a full set of documents, not just a photo of the plate.
- The final step is swapping the plate at the DLT office where your car is registered.
What you receive when you buy a plate
- Auction plate: the rights to the number are transferred to you from the current holder. You then use the documents to put the number on your car.
- Classic white plate: the number is tied to the seller's car, so the plates are swapped between the two cars. Both cars must be the same vehicle type and registered in the same province.
Either way, what you should get is a full set of documents you can take to the DLT office.
Six checks before you send money
- The seller is a real business, with a shop or website, and can be reached by LINE and by phone.
- Ask to see proof of the rights, such as the auction certificate or the registration book of the car carrying the plate.
- The name on the documents matches the seller, or there is a proper power of attorney.
- The price is close to similar plates. Ask why if it is much cheaper.
- You know the steps and every fee: who files the paperwork, which office, and any extra costs.
- You get proof of payment and the refund terms in writing.
Warning signs
- Pressure to pay right away without seeing documents.
- The seller avoids phone calls.
- You are asked to pay into an account of someone unrelated to the seller.
- The seller cannot explain the steps at the DLT office.
If you see these, slow down. A genuine plate will wait while you check the documents.

Questions
Do I have to go to the DLT office myself?
The plate swap is done at the DLT office in the province where your car is registered. If that is hard for you, ask us about handling it for you.
Can I put a plate on a car that is under finance?
Usually yes, but you need a letter of consent and a power of attorney from the finance company first.
What if the plate is sold before I pay?
You get a full refund of anything you paid, and we can help you find a similar number.
