Lucky numbers on Thai license plates

Many Thai buyers choose a plate for what its numbers mean. Here is how they read a plate, and the numbers people ask us about most.

In short

  • Each digit from 1 to 9 is linked to a planet in Thai astrology.
  • Buyers read a 4-digit number as three pairs, for example 2459 as 24, 45 and 59.
  • The total of the letters and digits, called the plate sum, matters too.
  • Different traditions give different meanings. Treat them as a guide, not a rule.

What each digit means

In the Thai system most shops and buyers use, each digit has a planet and a theme:

DigitPlanetAssociated with
1SunLeadership, reputation, confidence
2MoonCharm, gentleness, the arts
3MarsHard work, quick decisions, energy
4MercuryNegotiation, trade, communication
5JupiterWisdom, support from senior people
6VenusLove, happiness, money
7SaturnPatience, steadiness, responsibility
8RahuFast-moving money, bold risk-taking
9KetuThe sacred, intuition, protection from harm
0NoneEmptiness. Many traditions avoid it

Popular lucky pairs

Pairs work in both directions, so 14 and 41 read the same way.

  • 14 / 41: success and help from senior people
  • 15 / 51: charm and good fortune
  • 19 / 91: leadership and fast progress
  • 24 / 42: popularity and good finances
  • 36 / 63: money flowing in
  • 45 / 54: wisdom and stability at work
  • 56 / 65: a happy life, love and money
  • 59 / 95: protection and good standing
  • 89 / 98: strength and money on the move, a favourite with Chinese buyers

How to read a whole plate

  1. Split the number into neighbouring pairs. A 4-digit number gives three pairs.
  2. Read each pair. The last pair usually counts the most.
  3. Check the plate sum, which adds the value of the letters as well. Our plate sum guide shows how.

Two examples: 2459 reads as 24, 45 and 59, three good pairs. 9889 reads as 98, 88 and 89, linked with money and strength.

The digit total adds the digits only. The full plate sum also adds the letters, so the same number can have a different sum in a different letter series.

Auction numbers are released by the Department of Land Transport (DLT) through auctions, so they usually cost more. Numbers that can be issued as classic white plates are often easier on the budget.

Choosing a plate

Start with the plate sum you want, then look for a number with good pairs inside it. If your favourite number is an auction number and over budget, a similar number may be available as a classic white plate.

Questions

Is 0 a bad number on a Thai plate?

0 has no planet, so many traditions avoid it. Others say it makes the digits next to it stronger. It comes down to personal taste.

Should I look at the pairs or the plate sum first?

We suggest choosing the plate sum first, then a number with good pairs inside it.

What is the luckiest number?

There is no single best number for everyone. It depends on the plate sum, your birthday and what you want to support. Message us and we will help you choose.
