How to calculate a Thai license plate sum
Add the value of each letter to every digit on the plate. That total, the plate sum, is what Thai buyers check first.
In short
- Plate sum = the value of every letter + every digit.
- Count the number in front of the letters too, for example the 8 in 8ขก.
- Do not count the province name under the number.

Three worked examples
- กข 1234 = 1 + 2 + 1 + 2 + 3 + 4 = 13
- ขข 911 = 2 + 2 + 9 + 1 + 1 = 15
- 1กท 2459 = 1 + 1 + 1 + 2 + 4 + 5 + 9 = 23
Common mistakes
- Forgetting the leading number. The 1 in 1กท or the 8 in 8ขก must be counted.
- Reducing to one digit. The plate trade uses the full total, for example 24, not 6.
- Mixing tables. Some traditions give a few letters different values, so results can differ.
- Word plates with vowels. Traditions count vowels differently. Ask us before you pay a deposit.
